Big Blow for Team India: Bumrah Ruled Out of England ODI Series, raises concerns over Champions Trophy 2025 participation

Bumrah Left Out of India’s ODI Squad for England Series: Injury Concerns Loom

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced an updated ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against England, with a notable absentee—Jasprit Bumrah. Initially named in the squad, Bumrah’s omission has sparked concerns among fans and analysts, especially with the Champions Trophy approaching.

Bumrah’s Injury Raises Questions

BCCI has not provided an official confirmation regarding Bumrah’s absence, but sources suggest it is linked to an ongoing back issue. Senior selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar had earlier stated that Bumrah would miss the first two ODIs while undergoing medical assessments. A detailed report on his condition is expected after further consultations with specialists.

Bumrah’s Evaluation at NCA

Bumrah sustained a back injury during the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney. He was taken for scans mid-match, ruling him out from bowling in India’s second innings. On February 3, he arrived in Bengaluru, where the BCCI’s medical team at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) is assessing his fitness. His participation in the Champions Trophy remains uncertain, with an official report expected soon.

India’s Pace Attack for England ODIs

With Bumrah sidelined, the Indian pace attack will be spearheaded by Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit Rana. Shami, who recently returned to international cricket in the T20I series against England after a year-long injury layoff, will play a crucial role. The management hopes he regains peak form ahead of the Champions Trophy.

Varun Chakravarthy Earns Maiden ODI Call-Up

In a significant selection move, mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy has been added to India’s ODI squad following his impressive performance in the T20I series against England. Chakravarthy took 14 wickets in five matches, including a five-wicket haul in Rajkot, earning him the Player of the Series award.

“The Men’s Selection Committee has added Varun Chakravarthy to India’s squad for the upcoming 3-match ODI series against England. Varun picked 14 wickets, including a five-wicket haul in Rajkot, in the recently concluded 5-match T20I series against England. He was also the Player of the Series for his stellar bowling performance. Varun has joined the ODI squad in Nagpur,” read the BCCI’s official statement.

With key players missing and fresh faces stepping in, India’s ODI series against England will serve as a crucial test ahead of the Champions Trophy. All eyes will be on the team’s performance and updates on Bumrah’s fitness in the coming days
